What are Hijacking Moments and how do you go about managing your hijacking moments?
Hijacking Moments are moments that happen out of the blue. Emotional hijacking moments happen instantly and unexpectedly and can derail you from what you were on track to accomplish. Some of these moments can change the direction of your life. Managing hijacking moments is the key!
How many types of Hijacking Moments are there?
Many; some are slight, like getting a speeding ticket on the way to work unless of course you are like me and get several tickets in one summer.
One summer, it took me getting three speeding tickets in a span of three months before I realized Sylvania cops really liked watching out for me. That was a costly summer no doubt, Ugh! My soon to be husband said if you don’t take the led out of your foot and stop supporting the city of Sylvania, I can’t marry you!
Then there are those moments which turn your world upside down; an out of the blue diagnosis that leaves you reeling in the darkness of despair
In April of 2018, I was emotionally hijacked by a cancer diagnosis, the treatment caused me to lose my dignity, my hair, and my strength. Additionally, I dealt with the rollercoaster of emotions, I felt threatened and afraid.
I had a choice to make. I could resist my reality or I could accept it. When you resist your reality, you stay in the emotional hijack. You create your own pain and suffering, which is an optional choice you make. You stay stuck wishing things were different. When you accept your reality, you recognize you can’t change the situation. Then and only then can you move on.
I immediately decided I would not give cancer permission to take over my life, I refused to let it stop me, I BOUNCED BACK! True, I could not change the diagnosis or the disease however; I could choose what I would accept, how I felt, my inner world, and my outlook on life. In the middle of treatment, on the steroid days, which were bi-weekly, I finished writing my book Bouncing Back! Overcoming Obstacles.
The way we deal with hijacking moments determines how quickly we bounce back!
Some moments cause more grief, such as an unexpected and unwanted conversation
You find yourself hijacked because these conversations can at times be dreadful. You are frustrated, anxious and angry at yourself for not handling these conversations better. Hijacking moment conversations are difficult no doubt! You too have experienced these conversations, and you tend to remember them like they happened yesterday; this is the biggest reason why most people avoid them like the plague.
We all have moments during our lifetime where things happen which we have no control
True, some can be derailing, causing an explosion of emotions, and can turn your world upside down depending on their intensity.
Although hijacking moments exists and will continue to exist, the goal should be to resolve or eliminate these hijacking moments before new ones come into our lives
This way you can have more time and availability to create positivity, stay in your purpose, passion, and create a path to improve your success.
